Watch Review: Breguet Type XXI 3817

Baselworld 2016 showed a pattern that displayed the importance of sticking to your roots as a watch brand.

Many of the watches unveiled earlier this year displayed new designs inspired by vintage style and historic functions that were beloved back in the day. Today, we’re reviewing one of our favorite new watches: the Breguet Type XXI 3817.

Ariel Adams at ABlogtoWatch called this timepiece “…one of the finest pilot-style chronograph watches currently available.” After taking a look at it ourselves, we can see why it deserves that compliment.

What really sets this watch from other pilot watches (and the other ones in the same collection, really) is the movement. A new feature in this line is the attractive polished gold rotor movement is visible through the sapphire crystal caseback window on the rear of the watch. On top of being gorgeous, it’s also impressive in function. The in-house Breguet caliber 584Q/2 is the newest version of the caliber 584Q. It now includes an inverted in-line Swiss lever silicon escapement to replace the old metal version. It’s refreshing to see Breguet continue to use silicon parts as they move forward in technology to ensure the most advanced movements.

With a power reserve of 48 hours, the caliber 58Q4/2  offers an efficient automatic movement. On top of features like the time, date and flyback chronograph, it also has a synchronized 24-hour hand operating as an AM/PM indicator. And because it’s a top of the line aviator watch, it boasts a bi-directional rotating bezel.

Design

The Breguet Type XXI 3817 has been updated in terms of aesthetic. The vintage-style dial and light tan coloring accents were inspired by the aviator watch of the 20th century.  The 42mm steel case displays a slate gray dial, tan colored luminant hands, and Arabic numerals. The matching calf leather strap ties everything together flawlessly.
